History

Mr. Fred S. Bailey, for many years President of the Champaign National Bank (now merged into Busey Bank), established a trust fund which would provide scholarships for students at the UIUC who have demonstrated leadership abilities and commitment to the moral and religious dimensions of life. The fund was established in 1957. It is administered by the YMCA at the UIUC. (Return to Index)

Who May Apply

Fred S. Bailey Scholarships are awarded to financially needy undergraduate students at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) with good academic standing who have demonstrated a concern for the welfare of others and for helping make our society better.

This fund is for male and female undergraduate students who have been accepted for enrollment or are already enrolled at the UIUC. Applicants must be full-time students and must maintain a grade point average of 2.5 (C+) or better. Bailey Awards are based on need as well as on personal qualities and achievement. Most (but not all) Bailey awardees are from families whose incomes are significantly below the Illinois median household income, which is approximately $48,000. (Return to Index)

We have been able to assist most applicants who meet our Basic Qualifications. But roughly 20% of our applications have lacked convincing evidence of serious financial need and concern for others. These essential requirements are never waived.

We expect students and their families to assume as much of the burden of college costs as they can; Bailey awards are not intended to replace, but to supplement, self-help. We do take special financial circumstances into account. Every Bailey application is read with care by several committee members. (Return to Index)

An autobiographical statement including information about family relationships, school and extracurricular experiences, religious and/or community activities, employment experiences, special recognitions you have received, and goals and aspirations.

Your parent/s or guardian/s must supply financial information and must sign the application (unless you qualify as an independent student).

Your parent/s must provide information about last years' household income, including a copy of their most recent IRS 1040 form. All information sent us is kept confidential.
